Cold Wax Classes

I am adding cold wax and oil to my workshops. The prices will be a bit less than the encaustic classes. The materials cost will be $20 rather than the $40 for the encaustic.

I'm concentrating on Private Classes

I get to meet and hang out with delightful artists during the private workshops I offer. These are not beginning artists; they have had either some encasutic experience or a lot and want to learn many new techniques.

I cover making glass-like surfaces, transfers, oil glazes, using pan pastels, incising, carving, painting portraits, incorporating charcoal and wax pencil, encaustic on paper, shellac burn and anything else the participant want to experience. I will stay in touch for as long as there are questions or inquires about tool and materials.

How Many Techniqes Can We Try in One Day?

Joy has been working in encasusic for about 10 years and she wanted to add some advanced techniques to her list of things she already knew. While visiting San Miguel, she spent a day with me as a private participant. We covered transfers on parchment paper, oil glazes, India ink, charcoal for texturing, shellac glue burn and I showed her how to make prints on the very thin rice paper we get here in Mexico.

Look What Can Be Done in One Day

O.K, Janice has experience with encaustic and makes some lovely paintings for her gallery in Bend Oregon, but she wanted to have a longer private class to experience my way of painting figuratively and the new techniques I showed her. The results are lovely, don't you think?

I was privileged to meet another artist, who came to San Miguel for the first time to take a three day private workshop with me.

Dana has been a working artist for years, specializing in murals and faux finishing, but never tried encaustic before. We covered everything from the basics of the history, ventilation, making medium to advanced techniques. She had a natural feel for the torch and immediately created glass-like surfaces and moved into more texturing.

During our break time we shared our stories and became better acquainted.

Positive Private Classes

At last count, I have taught about 90 encaustic workshops over the last 10 years, and have met wonderful artists, would-be artists and just great people who wanted to experiment with creating art with hot wax and resin. Several of my artist friends here in San Miguel de Allende , who learned the tecnique from me, have continued to work in this medium and make it their own.

I still get requests for workshops, but at this point in my life, (I am 81 years old), I find it far more satisfying to give private classes to people who have specific goals and questions about advanced techniques in encaustic. I can work side by side with them and much can be accomplished in a one or two day class. Both myself and the student have a great time and often develop lasting friendships.

I have stopped posting workshop dates and if at least 3 people are interested in a workshop, I will schedule one; however with the private students, I can arrange a date that works for both of us.

Bren, a lovely woman from Georgia came to San Miguel for her first visit and to take a class with me.

She had her list of questions on technique and especially wanted to learn how to paint faces in encaustic. After my demo, I had her start on a tinted board, concentrating on breaking up the face into shapes and tones.

I really like working one on one with private encaustic students. We can focus on exactly the technique and what  they want to accomplish in the 5 1/2 hours that we work together.

Julia wanted to learn how to combine the photo her husband took with her painting style. We made a transfer of this wonderful photo and she applied it to the board after putting down a good base of encaustic. She had had no previous experience in encaustic, so we went from the basics to her completed painting.

See what can be done in one day with me working side by side with you. I demo on another board, offer suggestions, but encourage the student to create their own vision.

Sharing my 60 years of art experience

In the past year, there has been few requests for a group workshops and most of the artists want specific techniques. I have been giving more private classes that can be arranged to suit your schedule and focus on exactly what you would like to learn.

I offer a side-by-side class where I work only with you for 5 1/2 hours. We actually can cover more in one day than in a two day workshop with several people.

 I supply primed boards, and all the other materials, including the encaustic paint, brushes torches and almost any tool you might like to try.
 

The cost is $250 U.S. or peso equivalent + $20 for materials. My students almost always leave with a few finished paintings.

Can you believe that these 2 participants never worked in encaustic before? It is amazing what they accomplished in just 2 days. The first day we concentrated on learning to handle the torch and what would happen  "if"... Day 2 we ventured into a couple of more techniques. We had lots of laughs and got to know each other. These workshop are not just about learning encaustic; it really becomes a sharing experience.

Beth's day in the studio

Beth had taken my introductory workshop a few months ago and wanted a private class to work on a special gift for her step daughter. Beth had the paper wedding invitation, 4 1/2 inches by 7 inches, She brought the invitation over yesterday so we could glue it to a prepared board and let it dry overnight. Today we worked with lots of encaustic layers, oil glazes, hot pen and stenciling. the 3D flowers are encaustic. We matched the colors from the brides bouquet. The main board was then adhered to a cradled board that had oil stain, encaustic and more stenciling. This will make a lovely, lasting gift.

Although I have had students from many countries participate in my encaustic workshops, not everyone can find the time to fit travel into their schedules to advance their encaustic techniques. So, now I have put together online encaustic classes that you can download when your schedule permits.

 This is an encasutic workshop like no other. I happily share my techniques that I personally teach and use. This is my way of working. 

These classes are directed to those who have had some art and encaustic experience. Beginners can also learn and experiment .

Classes are personal and detailed. It is just as if you are standing next to me in the studio during a private class. I encourage all my students to take the techiques and make them their own. Class 1
Working with drawing, translucent layers and hot pen

 Using thin coats of encaustic paint, ink and hot pen, we will layer translucent, luminous layers of medium over a white substrate, using our marks to create depth and active images.  Learn how to smooth the surface and build layer after layer to create luminosity.  Lastly, we will build raised lines with the encaustic pen to create more movement and contrast in texture.

Like a stained canvas, we will rub oil paint on a white substrate using milk paint or encaustic gesso as a white base. Then we, manipulate, soften and change the energy of the soft colors until we have an abstract painting that satisfies us. Next, we create a flat, smooth, encaustic surface over the oil stained board. It is possible to add stenciling, raised encaustic drawing or texture or collaged dry organic materials on the smooth

Class 5 

Combing oil paint and encaustic

This class will cover applying many colors of encaustic paint, and moving the paint with heat to bring up the underpaintng. We combine oil paint and encaustic, including glazing with light touches of oil paint, scraping to reveal subtle color surfaces, cutting in to revealing the deep layers, and using charcoal and wax pencil to enhance the movement of the composition.

In this class, we will layer multi-colored under painting, using heat to mix and blend the paint. A final layer of single color encaustic covers most of the under painting and then the scraping and cutting reveals the diverse colors and movement

Incising lines, drawing on rice paper, embedding, joss paper

We will create free form drawing with ink on thin rice paper, and imbed the paper invisibly into already Incised lines for sharp accents. Using the rice paper allows us to add detailed patterning easily. You do not have to be able to draw figuratively. You can trace or transfer an image on the encaustic and begin from there.

Building surface, composition, variety of surface and design with different textures and types of paper, layering, embedding , photographs, metal, and using Joss paper

Building heavy, lava rock-like textures
We will build heavy layers of encaustic paint and then add deep, textured depth with water

Class 10

Encaustic on paper

 Using encaustic over watercolor on paper with hot pen enhancements.

First we will create a simple watercolor painting, cover it with clear encaustic medium, incise lines and add texture details with an encaustic pen. and/or paint directly on the paper, scrape, cut. and reveal the under painting.

Building, molding and sculpting with encaustic

We will mold encaustic into organic shapes and attach them to the painting.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico is a center of culture, art, and music. This charming colonial town attracts artists in all fields. This is where I live, work and teach. I have working primarily in encaustic for 13 years and have been teaching the technique for almost 9 years. I have had hundreds of students come through my workshops in my studio/home and I have made new friends and wonderful contacts through the classes.

 I received my degree in painting many years ago and continued studying art afterwards including printmaking, welded steel, stone, bronze and wood sculpture. I have been a working artist for over 50 years. I’ve worked in the art departments of publishing companies, owned and directed 2 art galleries, and have my work in many collections. That said, I consider myself a classical artist that now is painting in encaustic.

I fell in love with the encaustic technique when I first saw it in a gallery in Portland OR. about 14 years ago. There was little technical information about encaustic that was available at that time and I learned by all my mistakes. We are fortunate that now we are practically bombarded with encaustic info, some of it wonderful and helpful, and some of it just wrong, if you are interested in making archival work.

The way I teach is to share my expertise, and unique style with you, and then I encourage you to take the technique and make it reflect who you are when you take it into your own studio.
