Oct. 16 & 17th 10am to 3 pm
Nov. 13 & 14, 10 am to 3 pm.
Two Day Workshops: $250 USD plus $20 materials fee

I'm concentrating on Private Classes

I get to meet and hang out with delightful artists during the private workshops I offer. These are not beginning artists; they have had either some encasutic experience or a lot and want to learn many new techniques.

I cover making glass-like surfaces, transfers, oil glazes, using pan pastels, incising, carving, painting portraits, incorporating charcoal and wax pencil, encaustic on paper, shellac burn and anything else the participant want to experience. I will stay in touch for as long as there are questions or inquires about tool and materials.

Look What Can Be Done in One Day

O.K, Janice has experience with encaustic and makes some lovely paintings for her gallery in Bend Oregon, but she wanted to have a longer private class to experience my way of painting figuratively and the new techniques I showed her. The results are lovely, don't you think?

Encaustic Beginners

Yesterday I spent a day with two beautiful sisters,  from Texas. They are visiting San Miguel de Allende with their parents.

They had never tried encaustic and they only had one day to experience painting with hot wax and torches.

Perhaps, because they came with no expectation, and are young and open, they picked up the technique fast.

Positive Private Classes

At last count, I have taught about 90 encaustic workshops over the last 10 years, and have met wonderful artists, would-be artists and just great people who wanted to experiment with creating art with hot wax and resin. Several of my artist friends here in San Miguel de Allende , who learned the tecnique from me, have continued to work in this medium and make it their own.

I still get requests for workshops, but at this point in my life, (I am 81 years old), I find it far more satisfying to give private classes to people who have specific goals and questions about advanced techniques in encaustic. I can work side by side with them and much can be accomplished in a one or two day class. Both myself and the student have a great time and often develop lasting friendships.

I have stopped posting workshop dates and if at least 3 people are interested in a workshop, I will schedule one; however with the private students, I can arrange a date that works for both of us.

Bren, a lovely woman from Georgia came to San Miguel for her first visit and to take a class with me.

She had her list of questions on technique and especially wanted to learn how to paint faces in encaustic. After my demo, I had her start on a tinted board, concentrating on breaking up the face into shapes and tones.

I really like working one on one with private encaustic students. We can focus on exactly the technique and what  they want to accomplish in the 5 1/2 hours that we work together.

Julia wanted to learn how to combine the photo her husband took with her painting style. We made a transfer of this wonderful photo and she applied it to the board after putting down a good base of encaustic. She had had no previous experience in encaustic, so we went from the basics to her completed painting.

See what can be done in one day with me working side by side with you. I demo on another board, offer suggestions, but encourage the student to create their own vision.

Lori had a private class and used almost every technique possible in encaustic

Lori's first creation: photo printed on rice paper, transfers, India ink, incised lines, raised lines with the hot pen, charcoal, wax pencil, oil glazes, burnt shellac. No wonder she was full of ideas how add new techniques to her work when she gets back to her own studio.

New format for the encasutic workshops

I am now offering 3 day intensive workshops that include transportation from town to my home/studio/gallery that is a 15 minute drive  into the country.

Of course, the 2 day workshops are still happening. The 3 days is for you artists who just are not ready to stop after the first 2 day of fun and creativity.

New Studio, new workshop schedule

I have a new studio with room for more students. Lots of space and light with everything you need to create amazing encaustic painting. I have hundreds of examples of what can be developed in encaustic from simple marbleizing, carving, collage, photos , transfers, carving, painting figuratively and more.

I am an award winning artist and have exhibited my work Internationally. My classes are longer that others offered and I will pick you up and bring you to my beautiful studio/home/gallery for an afternoon in the campo, experiencing an artistic adventure and leaving with completed paintings.

Encaustic is an expensive medium, but I supply everything. All you need to bring is a snack or lunch. I have had advanced artists in my classes and others who have never had a brush in their hands.

I am flattered

Colleen from Minnesota has been visiting San Miguel for almost 3 weeks. We had a lovely day together for her private encaustic class. We covered many techniques including, incising, oil glazes, transfers, burnt shellac, scraping, oil pencil and most importantly Colleen used the torch for the first time. The torch seemed natural to her even though she had previously only used the heat gun.

In a private class we can really focus and also get to know one another. I asked Coleen what had brought her to San Miguel, and she said, "You." She had read my memoir, bought my online classes and wanted to experience a class with me as will as well as spend some time in this beautiful, unique town of San Miguel de Allende.

I don't think this will be her only trip here.

Advanced classes

I have received some requests for advanced workshops in November and for next year. I will give a workshop for a minimum of 3 people and maximum of 5. For these classes, I will want to communicate with the participants and understand the direction of the techniques that are of interest. My videos show 11 different techniques, but I would like to concentrate on one or two in the workshops. It is more helpful not to scatter your creativity and work to perfect your work.

I am always happy to work personally in a private class. That way you can have my full attention and help. A lot can be learned in one day. Several private students have been interested in painting figuratively in encaustic. One person, just wanted to watch me work for a day, so I can design a class just for you.

I will offer an advanced workshop Nov. 4 & 5. That is just after the big Day of the Dead festivites, so if you are visiting San Miguel, you can combine your trip with an encaustic workshop and a colorful fiesta. Bring your camera.

Advanced encaustic techniques

We finished the 2 days advanced technique workshops yesterday, June 21.

I love how each person created their individual pieces showing their personal voices. This is something I emphasis. I share everything I know about painting in encaustic. After the lengthy demo, the workshop attendees can examine my home/studio/gallery that is filled with my paintings. I am happy to share whatever techniques, I use, but always say, "I give you the technique, now make it your own."
 
Note how everyone's work is completely different. When I see that, I know I have succeeded as a teacher.
 
We had a wonderful time making new friends, sharing our ideas and encouraging everyone's creativity.
 
I have another advanced technique class scheduled July 8 & 9 and then I will take a break and begin to make my on-line classes videos. I know what classes I will cover and now to challenge myself with the technical aspects.

First time painter

Alan is a friend of my youngest daughter and he is visiting San Miguel for 10 days. He tried his hand in encaustic painting, even though he never has painted anything in his life. I decided to dedicate his private class to the basics, creating a smooth surface and transfer. We were both most pleased with the results of a days work.
